On Saturday before I go to the Omaha Fashion Week preview show(yay Emma!) I will be teaching/leading an art class for Girl Scouts. The project is called ArtVenture and every year the girls put together a piece of art using a variety of mediums with a local collaborating artist. The piece of art gets put in a silent auction for charity in April. This year I was chosen as the artist/mentor for a particular group of girls and I couldn’t be more honored.
I was asked by Lisa, my sister-in-law’s sister to participate a few weeks ago and when she asked I was honestly floored. What an honor. She put it all in my hands to decide what medium and materials to use but she wanted it to be based around the same concepts that Anthropologie has. I interned there a few summers ago and absolutely live and breathe the brand. I may not be able to afford everything I want there, but I am on their site daily and rave to everyone I know about them. Anthropologie’s main concept is all based around experiential retailing. When you go into an Anthropologie store, all 5 senses are stimulated and inspire you enough to want to take their concept home with you. In turn, you end up buying new sheets, a candle, a dress, a bar of soap for your mom, and walk home dreaming of how to make your living room look like their display. It’s all an EXPERIENCE. And it works.
One of my favorite projects Anthropologie has done is the plastic bottle flowers. From afar, the flowers might look like cut or blown glass but as you get closer you can notice they are cut from the tops of bottles, recycled bottles of course. Anthropologie’s displays are usually made from recycled materials from around the community and are used for long periods of time in several different areas of the store. I thought working with young girls, this would be a perfect craft for them because it is low maintenance with really outstanding results.
We will be taking the group of girls through the Anthropologie in Regency on Saturday morning and crafting all afternoon. I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to spend my Saturday. I look forward to posting pictures and sharing my experience with you. I will share a short tutorial on how to make your own plastic bottle flowers, in case you wanted to play the at-home version.
